What is a CSA?
CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. There have become many variations, but the basic idea is that eaters (you) pay a certain amount of money to receive a number of items from the farms’ harvest each week for a certain number of weeks. Your share is picked up at a drop location that is convenient to your home or work. Many people love CSAs because it’s an impetus to be creative and prepare more meals than they would otherwise. The upfront investment helps farmers have operating money to get prepared for the season, and this makes it truly a community supported venture. Also, many CSAs offer weekly recipes and stories about what is happening on the farm.
What should I know before joining one?
Below are some good questions to have for farms offering a CSA:
- How many items are in a box each week and for how many weeks?
- Do you have a list of the items you project to have throughout the season?
- Does the farm source all the food or does it get food from other farms?
- Do you offer half-shares? (Good option for small households, another is to partner with a friend)
