Hi there. If you are a die-hard environmentalist, you’re probably familiar with the keynote speaker for our 17th Annual Conference on Jekyll Island.
It’s Ken Cook of the Environmental Working Group.
If you aren’t familiar with Ken , or if you think Georgia Organics has gone afield and stopped focusing on farms, please keep reading just a bit longer. I am going to share with you an email that I got from him today that will demonstrate why, when it comes to challenging Big Ag, Ken Cook is a badass.
It’s an email that asks folks to “Tell Congress: Don’t Let Big Food Hide the Truth about GE [genetically engineered] Foods!”
Here’s the rest of it, and the link to TAKE ACTION! (Which is something we should all be doing more of about this issue I’d reckon).
Big Food is up to its dirty tricks again.
Only two weeks into the new year, Big Food is already trying to push legislation through Congress that would limit your right to know what you’re eating.
Politico published a draft of the bill, which would bar states from requiring labels on food that has genetically engineered ingredients as well as limiting the Food and Drug Administration’s ability to compel food companies to use GE labeling.
It would even let companies label GE foods “natural!”
We need you to take action right now – your members of Congress need to know that you demand the right to know what you’re eating.
Big Food will stop at nothing to hide basic information about what’s in your food. If this proposal were to become law, it would make it impossible for any state to require labeling of GE foods, even if an overwhelming majority of residents demand it.
The industry bill would also block any attempt by states to make it illegal for food companies to put a “natural” label on products that contain GE ingredients.
Maine and Connecticut have already passed laws to require GE labeling, and Connecticut has prohibited GE ingredients in foods labeled “natural.” More than 20 other states are set to consider GE labeling laws in 2014. But Big Food’s new legislation, if passed, would eviscerate these efforts.
You have a right to know what you’re eating! Take action today to oppose Big Food’s plan to keep you in the dark.
Thank you for taking action. Together, we can defeat Big Food’s bad bill.
