Win it at the Market: Hickory Hill Farms

Our farmers and local vendors appreciate everyone who comes to our markets every week. For all the folks who go the extra mile and bring a new person along to one of our My Market Club markets, we want to thank you! As a token of our gratitude, each month, My Market Club will hold a raffle for great free prizes from our wonderful vendors. Bring a friend who is new to the market along on your next visit! They’ll get $5 and you’ll be entered to win free goodies from your favorite local vendors.

This month, the Freedom Farmers Market raffle prizes comes from Hickory Hill Farm, a sustainable family farm owned by Susan and Garry Shaw in Athens, GA. They feature organic and heirloom produce, as well as some meat and dairy products. We asked Susan a few questions to get to know a little bit more about them.

How did you get started in the business?

We have been self employed for 25 years. In 2008 we were forced to look at our business which was not doing well because of the down turn in the economy. We own my family farm which is a 204 acre farm and we decided we needed to make the farm work for our family. We discovered the farmers market and because we’d always grown an organic garden for our family we believed we could do it for others and that’s where it all began.

What’s your favorite thing about your market?

Our customers and the privilege we have teaching people about healthy eating and healthy sustainable organic gardening!

What is your number one passion outside of work?

We are very involved with our family and our church and both are our number one passion.

What’s your favorite food or recipe?

Well, that’s a really tough question. We enjoy a wide variety of foods. I suppose one of our favorite veggies is kohlrabi. A not so well known vegetable in the south. We slice it salt and pepper it and sauté it in olive oil and garlic

A big thank you to Garry and Susan of Hickory Hill Farms for their donation to My Market Club!
