The North Highland Farmers Market closed its first season in Columbus, they ran biweekly from June-Nov. 2018 at MercyMed Clinic. In their first season they had over $1500 in SNAP redemption and doubling! NHFM was a Potluck + Pitch winner from Nov. 2017 for which they won $2100 to plan and implement the market— funds were used to purchase EBT equipment, privately double SNAP, and paid a modest market coordinator stipend to Jenn Collins.
Key NHFM partner, MercyMed is a non-profit medical clinic in Columbus that offers reduced to free medical services for their patients. They’re also ardent believers in Food is Medicine. They’ve recently hired Keith Sims as the Community Health Farmer to implement a micro-farm on-site, manage the NHFM, and incorporate patient dietary education. Keith was a medical assistant at MercyMed this time last year, but after attending GO conference decided to take a huge professional leap—enrolled in an MPH program, left his job, and interned at Jenny Jack Farm for ten months. He saw the opportunity to serve his community more deeply, and MercyMed stepped up to make that vision a reality. Attached is a flyer on their current fundraiser to support their effort.
Another fun side note, Jenn Collins the market coordinator the first season started working at Jenny Jack Farm this past summer. She says working the market made her want to grow food for her community. And that’s her plan, she’ll be working and selling for Jenny Jack Farm throughout the 2019 year.
