Columbus 2018 Winning Idea: Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program – Winter Market
After winning the Potluck & Pitch award in September 2018 for her idea to host a farmers market for senior citizens as part of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, Franetta Myles wasted no time putting the event together. The extended winter market took place at the Stewart County Senior Center in Lumpkin, GA, on November 19th, 2018, just a few days before the Thanksgiving holiday. Approximately 50 seniors visited the winter market, which included cooking demonstrations and a produce giveaway. Every customer also received a $20 voucher towards their market purchase. “Stewart County does not have a grocery store in the vicinity, and with the Thanksgiving holiday being that week, everyone got their greens and their potatoes and everything they needed which was a big help to them.” See below for photos from the Stewart County Senior Citizens Winter Market.
Augusta 2018: Growing Augusta: Arts, Agriculture & Agency
Since winning the Augusta Potluck & Pitch award in September 2018, Karen Gordon and Carla Walker’s vision of a providing a space for creatives and growers in South Richmond County to find resources and build community has undergone some tweaks (including a name change), but the mission itself hasn’t changed. In addition to hosting a monthly community breakfast and pop-up market, Growing Augusta has been working with the Augusta Land Bank Authority to identify locations that could potentially be used for community gardens. “There’s so much work to be done, and it’s been challenging to figure out where to start,” says Gordon. “But [this partnership] with the land bank is huge for our project in terms of encouraging the community to grow food for themselves.” Growing Augusta holds its community breakfast and pop-up market every second Saturday at the Jamestown Community Center, and more information can be found on their recently launched website, www.growingaugusta.co.
