In 2015, The University of Georgia launched a Sustainable Building Class, a course offered jointly through the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and College of Family and Consumer Sciences (CFCS). Since then, students have had the opportunity to gain hands on experience in sustainable building, while also developing an innovative tool for sustainable farmers to increase farm revenues, attract skilled labor, or diversify income streams.

The University partnered with Georgia Organics to award the Tiny Farmhouse to a sustainable farmer in Georgia. Interested farmers complete an in-depth application, which is then blindly reviewed by a committee made up of Georgia Organics staff, board, and community members. The reviewers give each anonymous application a numerical value, and the highest ranked applicants may receive a site visit or phone call before a final decision is made.

Applications are given a numerical value based on the criteria below.

Farm profile (50% of total points) encompasses many factors, including farm profitability, land status, whether or not the farm has a business plan, the various insurance and investment policies the farm holds, and the farms self-defined and described successes. Ideally, the Tiny Farmhouse will be placed on a farm that shows strong business acumen and stability. 

How the Tiny Farmhouse will generate on-farm revenue or save farmers expenses (30% of total points) is an important consideration.Ultimately the placement of the Tiny Farmhouse on an organic farm should reduce the farm’s costs or provide additional revenue in some way to increase economic stability of the farm. Applicants with a thoughtful application should be able to explain this in the context of their operation. 

If the farm can absorb the setup costs and coordinate logistics (20% of total points), because although the Tiny Farmhouse is being given to a farmer, there are still associated costs with receipt of the Tiny Farmhouse. You can familiarize yourself with these by reading the recipient requirements. Applicants with a thoughtful application and a strong business plan should be able to demonstrate how they can incur the installation and maintenance costs, how they will incorporate reduced costs or additional revenues into their business plans, how other logistics of the use of the Tiny Farmhouse will be managed, etc. 

Applying farms must be members of Georgia Organics, Certified Organic, and currently selling their products direct-to-market or wholesale. Please note Georgia Organics contractors, employees, and Board Members are not eligible to apply.
