Lettuce Know, Lettuce Grow: WOODLAND GARDENS
September 12 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pmFREE
Celia Barss, head farmer of Woodland Gardens, will guide us through the farm’s lettuce production, from best practices in germination and optimizing success based on variety and preference of location (field or high tunnel) to post-harvest packing methods and how to price it.
Associate Professor Timothy Coolong of UGA’s Horticulture department will share his recent lettuce research takeaways as well. Stick around for lunch and socializing after the workshop.
Thank you to the support of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Specialty Crop Block Grant program.
Woodland Gardens is a 12+ acre, USDA Certified Organic vegetable, fruit and cut-flower farm in Winterville, Georgia, located just outside of Athens. Established in 2000, they specialize in highly diverse annual production, and grow over 80 different types of fruits and vegetables.
Their focus is on specialty production for chefs and direct retail sales. They currently deliver vegetables, fruit and flowers to Atlanta and Athens restaurants, Freedom Farmers Market and a local, year around weekly produce box program.
The farm operates year-round by using heated greenhouses and high tunnels helping to extend the growing season and increase the quality of our production. Fields are constantly rotated and cover cropped in an effort to replenish the soil as they strive for efficiency, quality, and the ability to continually improve and limit their inputs.
